English gematria converts the letters of a word into numbers and adds them up. The arithmetic is simple; the part worth understanding is that several different English systems exist, and they deliberately disagree with each other. This page explains the four that do most of the work, with the letter values and enough worked examples to verify the method yourself.

The four core English systems

English Ordinal

The plain alphabet position: A=1 through Z=26. It is also called Simple Gematria or English Simple. Nothing is reduced, so it is the easiest system to verify without a tool, and it is the default most published English gematria work assumes.

Full Reduction (Pythagorean)

Every ordinal value is collapsed to a single digit before adding: A=1 … I=9, then J=1 … R=9, then S=1 … Z=8. The name comes from the Pythagorean tradition that treats the digits 1 to 9 as the complete set of numeric archetypes. This is the system underneath most name numerology.

Reverse Ordinal

The alphabet turned around: A=26 down to Z=1. It is rarely used alone. Its value is as a cross-check — because reversal preserves the sum of any letter pair (A+Z always equals 27), agreement between Ordinal and Reverse Ordinal on two different phrases is a stronger signal than either one by itself.

Reverse Full Reduction

Reverse Ordinal values reduced to a single digit: A=8, B=7, C=6 … Z=1. It stands in the same relationship to Reverse Ordinal that Full Reduction does to Ordinal.

How a word becomes a number

Three steps, every time. Strip everything that is not a letter, replace each remaining letter with its value from the chosen table, then add the values together. That is the whole method — the differences between systems live entirely in the table.

Worked examples

LOVE

English Ordinal: L(12) + O(15) + V(22) + E(5) = 54

Full Reduction: L(3) + O(6) + V(4) + E(5) = 18

Reverse Ordinal: L(15) + O(12) + V(5) + E(22) = 54

LOVE is a useful illustration of why the cipher matters: Ordinal and Reverse Ordinal both give 54, while Full Reduction gives 18. Same word, same alphabet, different questions.

JESUS

English Ordinal: J(10) + E(5) + S(19) + U(21) + S(19) = 74

Full Reduction: J(1) + E(5) + S(1) + U(3) + S(1) = 11

Reverse Ordinal gives 61 and Reverse Full Reduction gives 34. The Greek spelling of the same name behaves completely differently — see 888 in Greek isopsephy.

NAME

English Ordinal: N(14) + A(1) + M(13) + E(5) = 33

Full Reduction gives 15, Reverse Ordinal 75, Reverse Full Reduction 21.

Why the systems disagree

They were built for different purposes. Ordinal preserves the distinctness of all 26 letters, which makes large totals meaningful. Reduction deliberately throws that away to work in a 1–9 space, which is what numerological practice wants. Reverse ciphers exist to give an independent second reading. Treating a disagreement between them as an error is the most common beginner mistake — the disagreement is the point.

Common questions

Which English gematria system should I use?

There is no single correct one. English Ordinal is the usual starting point because it needs no reduction step and is easy to check by hand. Full Reduction is what most name numerology uses. Reverse Ordinal is normally used as a cross-check rather than on its own.

Why do I get different numbers for the same word?

Because each cipher assigns different values to the same letters. LOVE is 54 in English Ordinal and 18 in Full Reduction — both are correct, they are simply answers to different questions.

Do spaces, numbers and punctuation count?

No. Every standard system counts alphabetic characters only. Spaces, digits and punctuation are skipped, so a phrase and the same phrase without spaces give the same total.

Is English gematria historically authentic?

English gematria is a modern adaptation. The mechanics come from Hebrew gematria and Greek isopsephy, which are genuinely ancient, but applying them to a 26-letter English alphabet is a development of roughly the last century.
