Names are the most common gematria input. Here is how to calculate one correctly, and what the resulting number can honestly be said to mean.
Typing a name into a gematria calculator is straightforward. Interpreting the result is where most confusion starts, because the same name yields a different number in each system and the internet tends to quote whichever number supports the point being made. This page shows the calculation for several names in several systems, so the variation is visible rather than hidden.
Before you start. Gematria maps letters to numbers. It does not predict personality, compatibility, life events or outcomes, and no controlled evidence supports such claims. Treat what follows as a tradition of symbolic interpretation, not as a forecasting method.
How to calculate a name
- Decide what counts as the name. First name only, first and last, or the full legal name including middle names. These give different totals, so choose first.
- Spell it as you normally spell it. Anglicised, native, married, maiden — each spelling is a different string of letters and therefore a different total.
- Type it into the calculator. Case, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored automatically.
- Read across systems. Note the cipher name alongside any number you plan to quote.

SARAH and JOHN share an English Ordinal value of 47 and a Full Reduction value of 20, then diverge sharply in every other system. Coincidences like this are common — there are far more names than there are plausible totals — and they are the main reason a single-system match is weak evidence of anything.
Names in Hebrew
If a name has a Hebrew form, calculating that form is a different exercise from transliterating it into English letters. ישראל gives י(10) + ש(300) + ר(200) + א(1) + ל(30) = 541 in Mispar Hechrachi. The English string ISRAEL, run through an English cipher, has no arithmetic relationship to that number. Reading the result honestly
Three habits keep name gematria from becoming self-confirming:
- Fix the cipher before you calculate, rather than choosing the one that produces the number you hoped for.
- Fix the spelling before you calculate, for the same reason.
- Check how common the total is. The calculator lists other words sharing your value; a total shared by dozens of entries is not a discovery.
Common questions
How do I calculate the gematria of my name?
Type it into the calculator exactly as you spell it. Every supported system is computed at once, so you can compare rather than committing to a single cipher up front.
Should I use my full name or just my first name?
They give different totals, and neither is more correct. Different numerological traditions specify different things — birth name, current legal name, first name alone. Decide before you calculate, so the choice is not made by whichever result you prefer.
What about middle names, hyphens and apostrophes?
Letters count; hyphens, apostrophes and spaces do not. Including or excluding a middle name changes the total substantially, so state which you used.
Does my name's gematria value predict anything?
No. Gematria is a letter-to-number mapping, and there is no evidence that the resulting totals predict personality, compatibility or events. It is worth exploring as symbolism and tradition, not as forecasting.
Which cipher do name numerology sites use?
Most use Full Reduction, also called the Pythagorean system, where every letter reduces to a single digit 1-9. English Ordinal is the other common choice.
