Jewish Gematria Calculator
An English-alphabet cipher built on the Hebrew 1–10–100 value pattern — and why it is not the same thing as Hebrew gematria.
Jewish Gematria is one of the most frequently searched English ciphers and one of the most frequently misunderstood. It takes the structure of the Hebrew alphabet — units, then tens, then hundreds — and applies that structure to the 26 letters of English. The result looks Hebrew and behaves Hebrew, but it is an English system. This page shows the values, works through examples, and draws the line between this cipher and genuine Hebrew gematria.
How the cipher is built
Hebrew has 22 letters arranged in three value bands: 1–9, then 10–90, then 100–400. Jewish Gematria copies that idea onto a 26-letter alphabet. A through I take 1 to 9. K through T take 10 to 100. U takes 200, and X, Y and Z take 300, 400 and 500.
Three letters sit outside the pattern: J at 600, V at 700 and W at 900. English has letters Hebrew does not, and the compilers of this cipher handled the mismatch by pushing those three into the high band rather than dropping them. It is the single most consequential feature of the system — any word containing J, V or W is dominated by that one letter.
The practical consequence is scale. In English Ordinal, no letter can exceed 26 and a five-letter word rarely passes 120. In Jewish Gematria a single late letter can be worth 500, so totals in the hundreds or thousands are normal.

J(600) + E(5) + S(90) + U(200) + S(90) = 985
English Ordinal gives 74 for the same word. The gap between 74 and 985 is entirely a property of the cipher, not of the word.
LOVE
L(20) + O(50) + V(700) + E(5) = 775
TRUTH
T(100) + R(80) + U(200) + T(100) + H(8) = 488
GOD
G(7) + O(50) + D(4) = 61
A three-letter word made entirely of early- and middle-band letters stays small, which is why Jewish Gematria totals vary so much more between words than English Ordinal totals do.

The distinction matters because the two are constantly conflated online.

Take a word that exists in both worlds. In Hebrew, תורה (Torah) is ת(400) + ו(6) + ר(200) + ה(5) = 611 in Mispar Hechrachi, and ישראל (Israel) is י(10) + ש(300) + ר(200) + א(1) + ל(30) = 541. Those numbers come from Hebrew letters. Typing the English words TORAH and ISRAEL into Jewish Gematria gives completely unrelated totals, because the letters being counted are different letters.

Related ciphers with the same shape
Two other systems in the calculator use a similar 1–10–100 structure on the English alphabet: English Extended and Agrippa. They differ in exactly which letter starts each band. TRUTH is 798 in English Extended and 488 in Agrippa, against 488 in Jewish Gematria — three positional ciphers, three answers.
Common questions
Is Jewish Gematria the same as Hebrew gematria?
No. Jewish Gematria is a modern English cipher that borrows the 1-10-100 value pattern of the Hebrew alphabet and maps it onto the 26 English letters. Hebrew gematria works on actual Hebrew letters. The two produce different numbers and answer different questions.
Why is the Jewish Gematria of a short word so large?
Because the cipher is positional. After the first nine letters the values jump to 10, 20, 30 and then to 100, 200, 300, so a single late-alphabet letter can contribute more than an entire short word in English Ordinal.
What is the difference between Jewish Gematria and Agrippa?
Both use a 1-10-100 pattern on the Latin alphabet, but they were built from different letter orders, so most words differ. TRUTH happens to give the same total in both, which is a coincidence rather than a rule.
Which one should I quote?
State the cipher name alongside the number. A gematria value is meaningless without it, and Jewish Gematria totals are large enough that they are easy to confuse with Hebrew Mispar Gadol results.
