Isopsephy (ἰσοψηφία, “equal pebbles”) is the Greek practice of adding up the numeric values of the letters in a word. It works exactly like Hebrew gematria, because both alphabets did double duty as number systems. It shows up in Greek inscriptions, in graffiti at Pompeii, in Suetonius, and most famously as a puzzle in the Book of Revelation.

How Greek letters carry numbers

The Greek system is positional in three bands: alpha through theta cover 1 to 9, iota through koppa cover 10 to 90, and rho through sampi cover 100 to 900. Twenty-seven values are needed for that scheme but the classical alphabet has only twenty-four letters, so three archaic characters were retained purely as numerals.

  • ϝ digamma — 6, sitting between epsilon and zeta.
  • ϙ koppa — 90, between pi and rho.
  • ϡ sampi — 900, after omega.

How a Greek word is calculated

Replace each letter with its value and add. Greek reads left to right, so there is no directional complication, and unlike Hebrew there is no final-form rule to worry about — final sigma ς is worth the same 200 as ordinary sigma.

λογος — logos, “word”

30 + 70 + 3 + 70 + 200 = 373

θεος — theos, “god”

9 + 5 + 70 + 200 = 284

αγαπη — agape, “love”

1 + 3 + 1 + 80 + 8 = 93. A useful contrast with ιησους: five letters, but all from the low bands, so the total stays small.

The calculator also reports a Greek Ordinal count (position 1–24) and Greek Pythmenes, the classical reduction of each letter to its unit root. ιησους gives 87 and 24 under those two.

Isopsephy compared with English gematria

English Ordinal counts 1 to 26 with no place value, so totals stay small and every letter matters roughly equally. Greek is positional, so a single high letter dominates a word: ωμεγα totals 849 and 848 of that comes from the initial omega alone. The two systems are not comparable, and a match between an English total and a Greek total is a coincidence of scale rather than a correspondence.

What is isopsephy?

Isopsephy is the Greek equivalent of gematria — the practice of adding the numeric values of Greek letters. The word means equal pebbles, from counting with pebbles on a board.

Why do Greek totals get so large?

Because Greek uses a place-value system: units 1 to 9, tens 10 to 90, then hundreds 100 to 800. A single late letter such as omega is worth 800 on its own.

What are digamma, koppa and sampi?

Three archaic letters that dropped out of ordinary writing but stayed in the number system, filling the values 6, 90 and 900. Without them the sequence would have gaps.

Does final sigma count differently?

No. Final sigma has the same isopsephic value as ordinary sigma, 200. It is a shape change only, unlike the Hebrew final letters under Mispar Gadol.
