What “the gematria value” actually means

A gematria value is a sum. Pick a system, look up each letter, add. Change the system and the sum changes — not because one is wrong, but because they are different mappings. Anyone who quotes a gematria value without naming the cipher has given you half the information.

The calculator resolves this by never showing a value in isolation. The headline cards show the systems that fit the script you typed, and the full grid below them shows every remaining method.

Note how little the two words track each other. TRUTH is higher in Jewish Gematria and English Extended; WISDOM is higher in Ordinal, Reduction and the reverse ciphers. There is no ordering between words that survives across systems, which is exactly why comparing methods is worth doing.

What the calculator reports

Headline values

Three or four cards at the top, chosen to match the script you typed. Latin input gets Ordinal, Full Reduction, Reverse Ordinal and Jewish; Hebrew input gets the four Mispar methods; Greek input gets Isopsephy, Ordinal and Pythmenes. You never see a row of meaningless zeros for systems that cannot read your alphabet.

Full method grid

Every remaining system, grouped as English, Kabbalah, Hebrew, Greek and Mathematical. The mathematical ciphers — Primes, Trigonal, Squares, Fibonacci — substitute a number sequence for the alphabet position and are useful mainly as controls: if a “meaningful” match also appears in Fibonacci, it is telling you something about arithmetic density rather than about the word.

Letter breakdown

Each letter with its individual value, so you can audit the total instead of trusting it. T(20) + R(18) + U(21) + T(20) + H(8) = 87.

Matching words

Other entries from the built-in word list that share your total in the selected cipher. This is the honest way to look for correspondences: the list is fixed and finite, so you can see how common a total is rather than searching until something fits.

Reduced values

Reduction adds the digits of a total repeatedly until one digit remains. WISDOM in English Ordinal is 83, and 8 + 3 gives 11, then 1 + 1 gives 2. Reduction is a compression step: it throws away most of the total, which is why two unrelated words constantly share a reduced value. Treat agreement at the reduced level as weak evidence.

Values across scripts

The same calculator handles Hebrew and Greek. שלום gives ש(300) + ל(30) + ו(6) + ם(40) = 376 in Mispar Hechrachi, and λογος gives λ(30) + ο(70) + γ(3) + ο(70) + ς(200) = 373 in isopsephy. On-screen keyboards are built in, so you do not need a Hebrew or Greek layout installed.

Common questions

What is the gematria value of a word?

It is the sum of the numeric values of its letters under one specific system. There is no single value for a word — each system produces its own, and all of them are equally valid outputs of their own rules.

Why does the calculator show so many numbers at once?

Because comparing systems is the point. A total that only appears in one cipher tells you little; a pattern that survives across several is at least more interesting.

Do capital letters change the value?

In almost every system, no. The one exception here is Francis Bacon, which deliberately assigns lower-case letters 1-26 and upper-case letters 27-52, so capitalisation is meaningful in that cipher only.

What do the reduced values mean?

Reduction collapses a total to a single digit by adding its digits repeatedly. It is a summarising step, not a separate system, and it discards information — many different totals reduce to the same digit.

Can I calculate a whole phrase?

Yes. Non-letter characters are ignored, so a phrase gives the same total whether or not you include the spaces and punctuation.
